What's new with the 2021 Crosstrek?
Improved Powertrain and Performance
Although the original Crosstrek is Subaru's best-selling car, there's no denying that the standard engine was a little lacking in power, reflecting the entry-level SUV market the vehicle is aimed at. The new Sport trim changes all that, providing the Crosstrek with the extra power some drivers have been waiting for. The 2.5L engine is the tried-and-tested model used in Subaru's Outback and Legacy models and delivers a pleasing 182 horsepower and 176lb-ft of torque. This output is roughly a fifth higher than in the base engine previously offered, and it really shows in improved acceleration both from a standing start and during highway passing. The 2021 Sport is fitted with either a continuously variable transmission or a six-speed manual, and as with other Subaru Crosstrek models, all-wheel drive is standard.
Fuel Economy
The Crosstrek Sport's fuel economy is surprisingly good considering the new, larger engine. With highway figures of 7L / 100km, the Sport matches the economy of the lower-powered trims in the lineup, while the city figure of 8.8L / 100km is only marginally higher, and is a small price to pay for the greatly improved performance.
Extended X-Mode System
Perhaps the biggest innovation for the Crosstrek Sport is the addition of an extended dual-function X-Mode system, which optimizes traction across the four wheels for different driving conditions. Unlike other Subaru models that feature X-Mode, the Sport's version is fully controllable to select from the different terrain options, rather than offering just a single mode for slippery surfaces. The result is superior handling under all kinds of conditions, with the system working quietly in the background without noticeable changes in driving behaviour.
Subaru Eyesight
If you choose the CVT version of the Sport, the car will also be fitted with the Subaru Eyesight suite of active driver assist functions. Standard highlights include:
- Pre-collision detection and automatic emergency braking
- Lane centering and sway control.
- Lane departure warnings and lane keep assist.
- Lead vehicle start alerts.
- Adaptive cruise control.
Sadly, the Eyesight system is unavailable with the manual transmission models for technical reasons, so if you want to benefit from cutting-edge safety technology, the automatic transmission drivetrain is the only option.
