When is the Perfect Time to Replace Your Tires in Alberta?

When is the Perfect Time to Replace Your Tires in Alberta?

It is no secret that having a bad set of tires on your vehicle can be extremely dangerous. And while we all try to keep up with regular maintenance on our vehicles, many people often forget to replace their tires. So, when is a good time to get your tires replaced? Here are a few tips to help you decide the best time to replace your tires.

Check Your Tires Expiration Date

You may not know this, but just like the milk in your fridge, your tires have an expiration date stamped on the side. Most tire manufactures recommend changing tires after they are five years old, and other manufacturers recommend 10 years. The type of rubber and the thickness of materials play a role in deciding when the tires will expire. Even if you do not see any noticeable damage to the tire, if you are driving on a tire that is past its expiration date, it is a good idea to have it replaced as soon as possible.

Check for Any Damage

This probably goes without saying, but if you see cracks bulges in the tire, replace the tire immediately. If there is any damage to the tire, there is a good chance that it will not take long for the minor damage to turn into something more severe. Which could cause damage to your vehicle or become extremely dangerous for you and the other drivers on the road.

Check the Tread on the Tire

Over time, the road and other weather conditions can cause the tread of the tire to wear down which can make it hard for your tire to grip the road. If the tire has been so worn that it is causing the tire to be smooth in some spots, the tire should be replaced immediately and should not be driven on.

If your tread is slightly worn down, but you are not sure if it is too worn or not, there is a simple way to test the tread. Grab a penny and stand it up on its side in the crevices of the tire. The picture of the Queen's head should be pointing downward. If the tread is covering the Queen's head, then the tread is fine. If you can see the picture of the Queen's head, then your tires should be replaced soon.

Have the Seasons Changed Dramatically?

Extreme weather can take a toll on your tires. There are specialty tires - like winter and summer tires - that are specifically designed to provide maximum grip on snow-covered roads and hot roads. If you are currently equipped with its winter tires, you should change them once the weather starts to warm up in the springtime. Additionally, if you have summer tires on your car, they should be changed out when the weather starts to get colder in the fall.
